Why My RTI Background Changed the Way I Tutor Students

After more than 20 years in education, mentoring, coaching, and test prep, I have learned something that shapes almost everything I do now:

Most students do not need more random work. They need the right diagnosis.

Over the years, I have taught thousands of students and tutored hundreds more. I have worked in classrooms, led programs, mentored students one-on-one, coached athletes and young people, and helped families navigate academic pressure from many different angles. One of the most important parts of that journey was my work with RTI and my experience serving as head of middle school and high school support systems.

That experience changed the way I see tutoring.

What RTI taught me

RTI, at its core, is about paying close attention to student performance, identifying patterns, and responding with targeted support instead of guesses.

It asks better questions.

Not just:

  • Why is this student struggling?
  • Why is this student underperforming?
  • Why is this student inconsistent?

But also:

  • Where exactly is the breakdown happening?
  • Is this a skill gap, a confidence gap, a pacing issue, a motivation issue, or a pattern issue?
  • What support will actually move the needle?

That way of thinking stayed with me.

RTI taught me to stop looking only at outcomes and start looking at patterns. It taught me to slow down, analyze, and respond with purpose.

How that translates into tutoring

That same mindset now drives the way I tutor students at AVERiiON.

When a student comes in frustrated, stuck, or underperforming, I am not interested in throwing more material at them and hoping something works. I want to know:

  • Where are they losing points?
  • What kinds of questions break them down?
  • Are they rushing?
  • Are they changing right answers?
  • Are they misunderstanding the task?
  • Are they running out of time?
  • Are they weak in content, or are they weak in strategy?

That is a very different approach from generic tutoring.

A lot of tutoring simply reviews content. There is a place for that. But after years in education and intervention work, I have seen that many students are not failing because they are incapable. They are failing because the real problem has not been identified clearly enough.

Patterns matter

When you have worked with students for this long, patterns begin to stand out.

You start seeing the same score leaks again and again.

You see the student who understands the material but falls apart under time pressure. You see the student who is bright but careless. You see the student who keeps choosing trap answers because they read too fast. You see the student who knows the math but sets the problem up incorrectly. You see the student whose confidence drops so quickly after one hard question that the rest of the section unravels.

These patterns are not random.

They can be spotted, analyzed, and addressed.

That is one of the biggest reasons AVERiiON was built the way it was. Our system did not come from theory alone. It came from years of real student interaction, real academic leadership, real intervention work, and real data.

Data is not cold when it helps students

Some people hear words like data, analysis, or patterns and think that sounds impersonal.

I see it differently.

When used correctly, data helps us serve students more personally, not less.

It helps us stop guessing.
It helps us stop overloading.
It helps us stop wasting time.
It helps us give students the kind of support that actually fits them.

That is what I carried from RTI into tutoring.

Instead of asking, “How can we make this student do more?”
I am usually asking, “How can we make this student’s work more targeted, more strategic, and more effective?”

From school leadership to AVERiiON

My work as a school leader helped me see the bigger picture. My work as a tutor helped me see the individual picture.

RTI helped connect the two.

In school leadership, you look for trends across groups of students. In tutoring, you apply that same careful lens to one student at a time. You study the breakdowns, identify the patterns, and build a plan that makes sense.

That is exactly how I approach students now.

At AVERiiON, the goal is not just to “help” in a vague way. The goal is to understand what is happening, why it is happening, and what specific next step is most likely to lead to real growth.

The difference between more work and smarter work

After 20+ years, I believe this more strongly than ever:

Students do not always need more work. They need smarter work.

That is true in school.
That is true in tutoring.
And it is especially true in test prep.

The right intervention at the right time can do far more than piles of unfocused practice.

That is what RTI taught me.
That is what experience confirmed.
And that is a big part of why AVERiiON works the way it does.

We diagnose. We analyze. We target. We build the plan.

Because when you understand the pattern, you can finally change the outcome.
