Read the chart title, labels, and units first.
A lot of mistakes happen because students jump into the numbers before understanding what the graph is showing.
Always check what the question is really asking.
Is it asking for a value, a comparison, a percent, a probability, a trend, or the best model?
Watch the units carefully.
Minutes vs hours, inches vs feet, dollars vs cents, and percentages vs decimals can change the whole answer.
Do not assume the graph starts at 0.
Some axes are scaled in a way that can make differences look bigger or smaller.
For scatter plots, look for the overall trend.
Ask:
Is it going up? Positive association
Is it going down? Negative association
Is there no clear pattern?
Does it look more linear or curved?
Do not let one weird point fool you.
One outlier does not usually change the main trend of the data.
For tables, use the actual totals.
Especially with probability questions, make sure you are using the correct row total, column total, or overall total.
For probability, slow down and match the wording.
“Of the students who attended…” means use that group as the denominator.
“Selected at random from all students…” means use the grand total.
Percent questions are everywhere. Know the basics.
Percent = part / whole
New value after increase = original × (1 + decimal)
New value after decrease = original × (1 – decimal)
For mean, use the total sum ÷ number of values.**
If it is a frequency table, multiply first, then add:
value × frequency
add all products
divide by total frequency
For median, put the data in order mentally.
Odd number of values: middle one
Even number of values: average of the two middle ones
In frequency tables, find where the middle position falls.
For histograms, pay attention to intervals.
The answer is often about which interval contains the middle or largest group, not one exact data value.
For box plots, remember the key parts.
Median = middle line
Q1 to Q3 = middle 50%
IQR = Q3 – Q1
Longer boxes or whiskers usually mean more spread
For ratios and rates, keep units attached.
Write things like:
miles per hour
dollars per pound
students per teacher
Units help prevent setup mistakes.
On multi-step questions, do one step at a time.
Do not try to do everything in your head if the problem has a table, percent change, and comparison all together.
Estimate before picking an answer.
Even a rough estimate can eliminate bad choices fast.
Use answer choices to help you.
If choices are far apart, you often do not need perfect arithmetic.
Be careful with “greatest,” “least,” “closest,” and “best fit.”
These words matter. Circle them mentally.
For line graphs, focus on change between points.
Ask:
Which interval increased the most?
Which decreased?
Where is the graph steepest?
For bar graphs, compare heights carefully.
Some questions want the actual value, while others want the difference between categories.
Best-fit model shortcut:
Linear = steady increase or decrease
Exponential = growth or decay that speeds up over time
No association = scattered with no pattern
Do not overthink easy visuals.
Many SAT chart questions are testing whether you can read clearly, not whether you can do advanced math.
Most common mistake:** rushing past the setup.
Spend a few extra seconds reading the graph correctly, and you save yourself from careless misses.
