Algebra Tips and Tricks
- Translate words into math carefully.
Sum means add. Difference means subtract. Product means multiply. Quotient means divide. Is usually means equals. - Read exactly what the question is asking.
Sometimes you solve for x, but the question asks for 2x + 3, the least integer, or the value of a constant like k or c. - Undo operations in reverse order.
To solve equations, reverse what was done to the variable: add/subtract first, then multiply/divide. - Keep both sides balanced.
Whatever you do to one side of an equation, do the same thing to the other side. - Distribute carefully.
When you see parentheses, multiply the outside term by every term inside.
Example: 3(x + 4) = 3x + 12 - Watch negative signs.
A missed negative is one of the most common algebra mistakes.
Example: -(x – 5) = -x + 5 - Combine like terms only.
You can combine 3x + 5x, but not 3x + 5. - Clear fractions when needed.
Multiply the entire equation by the least common denominator to make it easier. - Clear decimals when needed.
Multiply by 10, 100, or 1000 to remove decimals and reduce mistakes. - Memorize key inequality rule.
If you multiply or divide an inequality by a negative number, flip the inequality sign. - For consecutive integers, use structure.
Let the first integer be n. Then the next ones are n + 1, n + 2, n + 3, and so on. - For percent and ratio questions, set up equations cleanly.
Use part / whole = percent / 100 or write ratios as fractions. - Use plugging in when it saves time.
If answer choices are numbers, sometimes testing choices is faster than full algebra. - Substitute smartly.
If one equation already gives a variable in terms of another, plug it directly into the other equation. - Check whether your answer is reasonable.
A negative answer for a length, age, or number of students is usually a red flag unless the problem allows it. - Label variables clearly.
Let x = number of tickets, y = cost, etc. This prevents setup mistakes. - Memorize common linear forms.
Slope-intercept form: y = mx + b
Point-slope form: y – y₁ = m(x – x₁) - Know what slope means.
Slope = rise/run = change in y over change in x - For systems, know the three main methods.
Substitution, elimination, and graphing. On the SAT, substitution and elimination are usually fastest. - In word problems, build the equation before solving.
Do not rush into arithmetic. First decide: What does each piece mean? - Use back-substitution to check.
Plug your answer back into the original equation to see if it actually works. - Be careful with exponent rules.

An expression has no equals sign. An equation does. - Circle key words in word problems.
At least, no more than, increased by, decreased by, of, per, each — these often control the setup. - Do not do too much in your head.
